Community Engagement Coordinator VISTA - UWTC

The SPSCC Foundation has been increasing access to education by providing scholarships to students for 35 years. We are launching the SPSCC Alumni Association to create a network of engaged businesses & individuals to provide mentoring opportunities to students, increase funding for scholarships, & provide career exploration & support to our Alumni. With over 6,500 students, the Foundation works to support students & families while going to school. Last year we launched a Food Pantry on campus to combat food insecurity. This year we will launch a “Community Bridge” partnership with local nonprofits to provide educational funding to those most in need in our community. We are expanding our Student Success funding to include more emergency funding for students in need as well. Our mission is to support student success for all students. Currently we give 6 Community Bridge scholarships to the most vulnerable members of our community associated with nonprofit organizations. This program provides funding for education for those who would not otherwise be able to afford an education. Once these students complete their education, they will be able to earn a much higher living wage to support themselves & their families, moving them into self-sustainability & away from poverty. We would like to build our capacity to award these scholarships by increasing our community partnerships from 6 to at least 20 nonprofits next year. Many of the Community Bridge Scholarship recipients as well as our general scholarship recipients qualify for state food benefits. To that end, we opened a Food Pantry on campus last fall. We have been surprised by the number of students accessing this resource and envision the VISTA member helping us build capacity by engaging community members in food/toiletry drives–increasing our capacity to support students in need.

Member Duties : The Community Engagement Coordinator will help increase educational access & completion goals for students at the college. Working with alumni & the community, this position will create mentoring opportunities, scholarships in specific program areas, manage opportunities in our database, hosting special events, & creating marketing materials to support this program. This position will work on our Community Bridge Scholarship program to provide funding to students involved with a local nonprofit-providing a bridge to education from an organization they already feel connected to. This position will be working on increasing our scholarship offerings to students with financial need. Many of these students are raising families while going to school. We know that obtaining a degree helps students earn a living wage & decreases family poverty.
