VISTA Student Leadership Coord.@ College of the Mainland

COM provides academic transfer courses through the AA and AS degrees, continuing education, one year certificates, and Associate of Applied Science degrees in high demand workforce occupations, as well as substantial GED preparation, English as Second language, college transition programming, and integrated basic skills and vocational training to under-skilled adults in Galveston County. COM develops and adapts programs to meet the needs of the service area and the larger state and regional economies by responding to employer demands and labor trends to support and enhance the economic viability of our communities and the students we educate. With a local tax-base heavily focused on petrochemical refining and health care, COM has large technical program in process operations and nursing, as well as significant skilled trade program in welding, mechanical maintenance, and machining. In the next few years, additional programs in development will come online, including electrician, electronics and instrumentation. COM also has areas of study critical to general business needs such as management and accounting. The intent of our capacity building is to expand and increase the effectiveness of those programs in our institution that target and support low-income and educationally disadvantaged students through our integrated education and training efforts which permit ABE, GED, and SESL students to begin training for a high wage, high demand career while simultaneously continuing their basic skills instruction, often with a cohort of students within their selected vocational field.
