Community Garden Development VISTA

Pierce Conservation District's community garden program engages community members in growing some of their own food, and collectively stewarding open space in their communities. We also educate about the importance of sustainable agriculture and encourage organic agricultural practices. We support a network of over 70 community gardens, 60 of which are new in the past 10 years. We are working to expand access to community gardens in areas identified as 'food deserts’ and working to develop system to support an increased number of gardens. The Food Access coordinator would recruit new community members to participate in our existing community gardens, as well as engage volunteers in the creation of new garden sites. They will gain experience in outreach, community engagement and organizing, capacity building for volunteers, and organizational systems development.

Member Duties : The VISTA will first identify existing and potential gardens in low-income, low-English speaking communities. Once gardens are identified, the VISTA will conduct a basic needs assessment of existing gardens in identified high need areas. Working with PCD Staff and garden volunteers, the VISTA will take lead to develop a strategic plan based on needs and opportunities. The VISTA will support the implementation and assessment of the strategic plan. The VISTA will then identify areas of high need where no gardens exist and identify potential garden sites. This VISTA’s work supports the elimination of poverty by supporting community gardens in impoverished communities. Community Gardens provide increase access to healthy food & exercise helping with disease prevention, providing opportunities to build social capital, & help prevent crime by invigorating vacant lots.
