Nature Nurtures Farm Development Associate VISTA - UWTC

Because everyone deserves a childhood that prepares them to succeed as an adult, Nature Nurtures Farm brings young people and animals together to build empathy, teach responsibility and inspire hope. Founded in 2012, Nature Nurtures Farm is an Olympia, WA non-profit that provides programs and services for at-risk, low income, and low opportunity youth including: animal assisted mentoring, summer day camps, youth community service opportunities and nature based early learning. Our mentoring program is an ongoing program where participants spend two hours a week with their mentor working with rescued farm animals. The mentoring program is free to qualifying participants who include low income and underserved youth, as well as a large proportion of foster youth, additionally we grant numerous scholarships to our summer camps to low income families. Research and experience suggest that opportunities for non-human animal interaction are a critical experience for children to develop empathy, compassion, and the ability to relate to those who are not exactly like themselves. Often children will trust and engage with nonhuman animals in ways that are too scary for them with other people. By encouraging this bond and this trust, and then working with youth to explore expanding those relationships of trust based on healthy boundaries into human relationships, we are able to help young people begin to build healthy relationships in their lives. Nature Nurtures Farm’s culture is one of acceptance and mutually shared responsibility. The presence of animals, with their ongoing needs for care and feeding, leads naturally into a community of people pulling together to meet the shared needs of the farm. This rural vibe, where the important piece is that the animals get what they need, gives youth a place to fit in and be needed in a way that is hard to recreate in other environments.
