Stewards VISTA: Friends of KAG - Education & Outreach

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is national park site featuring historic ponds filled with lotus, water lilies and wild habitat, offering a unique respite in our capital city. Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is dedicated to ensuring the Gardens are a well-maintained, well-enjoyed, and welcoming for neighbors and visitors. We do this by connecting people to the Gardens through stewardship, public engagement, and educational programs. The neighborhoods surrounding the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens have been systemically harmed and overlooked for decades, leaving residents with few avenues for economic, professional, or personal mobility. Neighbors, however have long desired for the Gardens to play a larger role in improving their quality of life. Increased programming as well as improved (and welcoming) access would create a respite to escape the stresses of the city and home life, as well as a place to individuals and community to gather to learn, work and play. Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and NPS have initiated some critical public programming for the Gardens’ neighbors in recent years featuring spring and summer break camps, volunteer events, an annual water lily and lotus cultural festival, a photography contest and more. We have made some significant inroads and now, together with you, as a Stewards VISTAs, we seek to enhance and codify our public engagement offerings, improve our communications strategy, and build a constituency to work toward a fully re-envisioned Gardens where neighbors view the park as part of their community and social fabric. This position is ideal for self-starters and fast learners who have a creative mind and work well in a collaborative team environment and on their own. Also, you should like having a total blast while working in a setting made for Instagram! This will give you the experience and skills needed for a career in environmental education, youth and community development.
