Stewards VISTA: Railyard Park Community Engagement

**Bachelor’s degree preferred or applicable experience and interest. ** **Local Applicants Preferred. Access to Bike/Vehicle needed** The Railyard Park Conservancy’s (RPC) mission is to provide community stewardship and advocacy for the care, educational programming, and public art in the Railyard Park and Plaza. The RPC accomplishes its mission through the generosity of a large cadre of dedicated volunteers and youth-in-service groups that contribute their time and efforts to keep the Park healthy, vibrant, beautiful and ready for various educational programming. The VISTA will provide and enhance job skills for area youth, jobless or homeless through horticultural and landscaping training and data collection. The VISTA will also provide vegetable gardening programs and produce to the homeless and/or hungry community utilizing neighboring organization’s partnerships to connect those people to our vegetable programs. The VISTA will also work with various area organizations and after-school groups to partner on providing free transportation to our Park. Our 2 Community Food Gardens are fully organic and shared with the community. Our Outdoor Science Classroom program for elementary thru middle school children is based on using the Park’s living plants and creatures to teach concepts of biology, physics, chemistry, even mathematics and art. An element that we weave throughout our youth programs is using our Native Bee House to teach youth about the importance of pollinators to other living creatures as well as humans. We do this by giving them hands-on lessons about nesting material preferences, food and water source preferences and studying the pollinator population in the Park to make informed improvements to the pollinator habitat in the Park.
