Literacy & Learning Outreach & Engagement Coordinator VISTA

The South Sound Reading Foundation positively impacts our region by promoting reading and literacy with children, youth, and families living in poverty. Many of these children and youth struggle in school because they read below grade-level. They do not have the resources, and, or the information to successfully engage in reading; and reading is the most fundamental skill a child will need in school and in life. According to the Center for Improvement of Early Reading Achievement, “Access to books and educational materials is the single biggest barrier to literacy development in the United States and beyond. If we can solve the problem of access, we will be well on the road to realizing educational parity – a goal which has eluded this country for generations.” That is why the South Sound Reading Foundation is out in our community every day: * Talking to families about the importance of reading—“It had not occurred to me that it might be important to read with my kids. I thought reading was something they’d learn in school. I’m so grateful I can help my kids get ready for school by reading with them.”—Homeless Mom * Exciting kids about reading with free literacy engagement programming, like story times, book clubs and book talks — “My son never passes on the chance to hear one of your stories. We love this program!” South Sound Dad, and, * Providing free, high quality age appropriate books through our book van and other outreach programming—“The book you gave me, I really enjoyed, and I will read it until I have it memorized. Thank you so much!” Your friend, Angel, grade 3 (identified as homeless) By educating families about the importance of reading together, engaging kids in reading enrichment programming, and providing children and youth living in poverty with high quality age appropriate books, the South Sound Reading Foundation addresses reading and literacy and will eventually dissolve the perpetual link between poverty and literacy.
