2018-2019 Development & Community Engagement VISTA

Through legal representation, advocacy, supportive services, and education, Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing promotes the availability of, and access to, affordable housing and protects the rights of families in poverty who are confronted with eviction, poor living conditions, and other serious housing issues. With nearly half of Chicagoans unable to afford where they live and eviction filings at 25,000 annually, the demand for LCBH’s legal and supportive services far exceeds the organization’s capacity. The VISTA will build organizational capacity and sustainability through donor development, community outreach, and communication in order to expand high-quality legal services to low-income renter families. The VISTA project will increase the efficiency of LCBH’s development and community engagement teams, allowing LCBH to develop a larger network of supporters. As a result, the VISTA will help LCBH bring crucial information on renters’ rights and the affordable housing crisis to new audiences and communities. In doing so, the VISTA will help more renter families break the cycle of poverty and secure long-term housing stability. The VISTA provides support to all aspects of fundraising and communications activities at LCBH. The ideal candidate enjoys planning special events and is comfortable interacting with and responding to the needs of volunteers. A team player, the VISTA collaborates with LCBH’s legal and supportive services teams to describe the impact of LCBH’s programs. As such, he/she is a creative writer, who crafts compelling messages for a variety of stakeholders across multiple platforms, including grant applications, social media posts, and donor thank-you letters.
