BMVP - Montana Veterans Access to Healthcare

To eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Of the more than 94,000 Veterans living in Montana, an estimated ten percent have Alzheimer's or a related dementia. As symptoms worsen, the care required of family members can result in increased emotional stress and depression; new or exacerbated health problems; and depleted income and finances due in part to disruptions in employment and paying for health care or other services for themselves and their care recipients. Caregivers experienced average income losses of $15,194 annually, with 41% losing 20% or more of their household income. Montana faces a disproportionate impact due to Montana having one of the highest per capita Veteran populations in the US and Billings is the only Alzheimer’s chapter delivering support in the entire state. Because age is the greatest risk factors for Alzheimer’s and related dementias, aging Veterans living with Alzheimer’s or related dementias and their family caregivers are projected to more than double by 2050. By building and strengthening resources and services, the quality of life and quality of care for low income Montana Veterans and their family caregivers can improve. Montana Veterans and their families affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias will have increased access to no-cost and low-cost, quality support services, enhancing their ability to remain safely in their homes longer and avoiding unnecessary hospitalizations and costly long term care facilities. This project will alleviate poverty by reducing family caregiver financial burdens and increasing access to healthcare to low income veterans who may be searching for healthcare options in treatment of dementia.

Member Duties : Prevent poverty for Veterans of Montana and their families by increasing their access to healthcare and low-cost support services! The overall goal is to increase access to healthcare for low income Veterans experiencing dementia and their families. This project is designed to alleviate poverty by linking veterans to benefits and services, allowing family caregivers the opportunity to go back to work, reducing the amount of lost income and therefore reducing the number of Veteran families that fall into poverty. In order to achieve success the VISTA will conduct a community assessment identifying veteran and low-income needs to present to potential partnerships, develop materials to increase community awareness and engagement, develop a volunteer recruitment and retention guide and training, and create a fund development plan for sustainability.
