LCCT: RGV Community Development VISTA @ Proj. Transformation

Project Transformation Rio Texas (PT) is focused on three “C’s”: Children, College students, Churches. The program breaks out of the notion of a one-way “helping relationship” with children and instead focuses on a model built on reciprocity: interns, volunteers, churches, and children are both providers and recipients of help. While the program fundamentally has been designed to “serve children,” all parties are in one way or another transformed. Project Transformation is a respected model of service, through which leaders emerge, communities change, and lives transform. Project Transformation’s program has been molded out of a search for the right answers to these questions: 1. How do we meet the academic, physical, social, and emotional needs of children from low-income communities? 2. How do we provide meaningful ways for college students to explore service vocations and develop as young adult leaders? PT offers 8 week literacy camps in the summer Monday through Thursday from 9am to 3pm, at selected site churches in underserved neighborhoods. Our curriculum focuses on the holistic development of each child and emphasizes relationship building in a safe and community-oriented environment to help each child realize their unique potential. PT addresses summer reading slide by providing high-quality services that are specifically aimed to bolster children’s academic achievement during the summer, allowing them to return to school stronger than when they left. Our work is largely set apart by the passionate college interns who implement our programs and invest in the lives of at-risk students. The heart of Project Transformation is relationships and the heart of relationships is people.
