Community-Based Research Liaison VISTA

Making Connections for mental health and wellbeing among men and boys is a national initiative to transform the social determinants of health that negatively impact mental wellbeing, especially for men and boys of color, veterans, LGBTQ communities and their families. Twelve communities across the United States are developing and activating strategies to enhance their sociocultural, physical/built, economic and educational environments. The Movember Foundation is funding the work; the Prevention Institute is providing coordination, training and technical assistance; and a team from the University of Southern Florida is evaluating our progress and outcomes as a coalition. 253 Making Connections Initiative (253 MCI) is one of those community coalitions advancing this work. 253 MCI is a partnership between Hilltop Urban Gardens, Centro Latino, Tacoma Urban League, Northwest Detention Center Resistance, Consultants for Indian Progress, people of color resident-owned small businesses and the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department. Our partnership employs a community-driven process to address individual and community level trauma among men and boys of color and LGBTQ people of color. The VISTA Community-Based Research Liaison will serve as a bridge between grassroots organizations led by people of color, non-profits that serve people of color, small businesses and TPCHD. The end product of the VISTA service will be the successful implementation and sustainability of an food sovereignty and agro-ecological coalition approach to addressing the economic and social determinants of health in our communities that produce food insecurity, poverty, hunger and obesity.
