NeighborWorks VISTA, CNE - Community Engagement

Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise (CNE) is a nonprofit housing organization that invests in Chattanooga by making residential loans, providing financial counseling, building homes and revitalizing neighborhoods in historically underserved parts of town. In 2017, CNE conducted a Resident Survey for the Community Impact Measurement (CIM) Project in the neighborhoods of Highland Park and Ridgedale. The goal of this project was to gather information about what residents wanted to change in their neighborhoods and how to make those changes possible. Using the results, CNE will work with residents to cultivate and strengthen community connections through three intervention methods: Sidewalk Dinners to gather further information and encourage blocks to work together to solve problems, curb appeal projects, and Know Your Neighbor events to encourage new and existing restaurants to come together with residents over a meal.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA member will work closely with the Community Engagement Specialist to implement these community building objectives. The VISTA member will create a Sidewalk Dinner toolkit for the neighborhoods to gather ideas and measure progress in the neighborhood. The Sidewalk Dinners will be designed to create conversation and create neighborhood advocacy. The VISTA member will also coordinate curb appeal projects on targeted blocks, recruiting volunteers and creating an effective toolkit for replication. The VISTA will also help to find funding for these projects, and will measure each project’s effectiveness. This intervention method is a result of the block observation portion of the CIM project. Finally, the VISTA member will coordinate Know Your Neighbor events. The VISTA will create a toolkit to both recruit and train resident leaders to identify places to hold events and plan them successfully.
