PCRG - Perry Hilltop & Fineview Community Engagement VISTA

Fineview & Perry Hilltop Citizens Councils (FCC & PHCC) are membership based Community Development Corporations that partner to build healthy, diverse, and inclusive communities. Over the past 15 years, FCC has built 27 new homes. We have also held many successful events, such as an annual Halloween Parade, Easter Egg Hunt, Community Festival, and a Step Challenge. These events have brought residents together and built pride in our community. Over the past 30 years, PHCC has achieved some major milestones. We have established a food cooperative, a community credit union, affordable housing, a drive to build a senior citizen’s high-rise, and a campaign to end real estate blockbusting that encouraged white homeowners to flee the neighborhood. Both groups recently created a Community Plan, which we are now working to implement. One of the overarching themes in our plan is reducing resident displacement, making sure our existing neighbors can benefit from development in our community. We are highly residential communities located in Pittsburgh's Northside (~4,500 residents), 10 minutes from downtown and just up the hill from many amenities, such as Allegheny General Hospital, Mattress Factory, Children’s Museum, Andy Warhol Museum, Science Center, Heinz Field, and PNC Park. We are looking for a VISTA who will work with us to make positive connections and engage our residents in building an awesome, inclusive community that benefits all of our neighbors, especially the most vulnerable. As a VISTA, you will receive official training from the AmeriCorps VISTA program. We will also train you to go door to door and support you as you strengthen the other skills required for this position. Lastly, we will help build your professional network. This is a Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group VISTA project. As the Pittsburgh area’s foremost convener of grassroots organizations, PCRG aims to prepare community leaders for a more prosperous, equitable region.

Member Duties : Be a part of developing community in a way that benefits people, not just buildings and property owners. Help raise resident voices and build grassroots power. As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, you will perform outreach to empower community members—knocking on doors, making phone calls, and meeting with neighbors, linking them to resources, and finding ways to connect them with our broader neighborhood development work. You will also get to plan and lead events that bring neighbors together for food and fun! We are looking for someone who is passionate about building relationships with people, good at remembering conversations, and skilled at connecting people to resources. We need someone who is comfortable knocking on doors and making cold calls. We are seeking a team player who is confident, creative, and empathetic to the needs of others. Experience with door knocking, community organizing, and event planning are skills needed for this position. Training will be provided.
