Substance Abuse Prevention Marketing VISTA

The Village VISTA Collaborative is a VISTA project sponsored by the Village for Children and Families in Hartford, Connecticut. VISTAs will grow the capacity of several programs of the Village, including the Partnership for Success substance abuse prevention program. VISTAs will serve low-income communities of Hartford and Vernon, Connecticut. The Substance Abuse Prevention Marketing & Social Media VISTA will use marketing strategies to support the Vernon ROCKS Coalition, a collaboration of community stakeholders, parents, youth, and volunteers, whose focus is to prevent the onset and reduce the progression of substance misuse and its related problems in Vernon’s youth by promoting protective factors and decreasing risk factors that contribute to substance use. Our mission is to provide Resources and Outreach for Community Knowledge and Success to prevent youth substance abuse. To do this, Vernon ROCKS brings together community members and representatives from all sectors of the community to strengthen the prevention capacity and infrastructure. Vernon ROCKS uses a data-driven model to implement the evidence-based strategies including raising awareness, providing education about substance use, enforcement strategies to reduce access and availability of substances, and providing youth with healthy alternatives. Through these strategies we empower youth to make informed decisions, provide parents and families with up-to-date information on current trends in our community and provide them with the tools to set clear rules and to have conversations with young people about making good choices. By working together the coalition strives to make population-level changes to create an environment that helps our community support healthy decision-making and to mobilize the community to protect and promote our young people.
