Cradles to Crayons Philadelphia

Founded in Boston in 2002, Cradles to Crayons (C2C), is an innovative non-profit that provides economically disadvantaged children ages 0-12 with everyday essentials - clothing, school supplies, baby safety equipment and educational toys - they need to thrive, stay safe, and be ready to learn. Our national founder, Lynn Margherio, saw the opportunity for Cradles to Crayons during Christmas four years ago. She noticed her nieces and nephews toys and clothes piled high in the playroom and closets at her brother's house. They were in perfectly good condition, but were no longer being used. She wondered how she could connect those goods with families who need them. The things most of us take for granted as necessities are luxuries that low-income and homeless families can't afford and therefore their kids go without. Lynn's vision has become a highly efficient, rapidly growing service that benefits tens of thousands of kids annually. By establishing community partnerships with neighbors, schools, youth groups and companies, C2C generates an ongoing supply of children's products and volunteer labor. Through product drives and year-round volunteer programs, Cradles to Crayons creates meaningful civic engagement opportunities that are easily accessible in local communities and at our warehouse. Through distribution partnerships with shelters, health centers, public school districts, parenting programs and day care centers, we directly reach the children who are most in need. During 2009, we partnered with over 600 social service agencies nationally to help more than 59,000 children and distributed product with a retail value of several million dollars. All services to family and distribution partners are free of charge.
