Addressing Substance Abuse & Behavioral Health Mobile Clinic

As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, you will enhance the capacity of local networks to respond to the opioid crisis by joining a consortium that will implement intervention strategies known to reduce opioid addiction and overdose deaths. Within your year of service, you will improve the health of rural Ohio communities through supporting the capacity of your local consortium to reduce the rate of opioid-related deaths. Ohio Northern University’s project builds on an existing mobile clinic created through a consortium of ONU, the county health department, the critical access hospital in Hardin County, and a Federally Qualified Health Center in Hardin County. Currently, the mobile clinic serves only Hardin County. The project will expand the service area of the mobile clinic to Allen and Hancock Counties, through collaborations with providers who have expertise in substance use disorders and behavioral healthcare, including Mercy St. Rita’s Health Partners and Blanchard Valley Medical Center. The service area is rural, with significant poverty and multiple barriers to healthcare access. It is designated as a health professional shortage area. Many communities in the area are also designated as medically underserved. The mobile clinic engages a multidisciplinary team of student nurses and student pharmacists as well as licensed prescribers, nurses and pharmacists to address the problems of substance use disorders and other behavioral health issues. The clinic’s team also will provide extensive prevention education to children and adults throughout the service area.
