2018 BEACON House, Inc. STEAM Works Program
BEACON House, Inc. is a new STEAM educational nonprofit seeking to increase the awareness of, access to, and achievement in STEAM learning in Washington County, Maryland. STEAM Works is a program that engages families through open workshops daily. As well as having, tutoring available throughout the week and structured learning activities with guest seminars on various STEAM projects. The VISTA member will help design and implement a funding plan that incorporates fundraisers, grants, sponsors, and other sources to support this program. The VISTA member will help recruit and manage volunteers to work with families and youth in the STEAM Works program. The goal of STEAM Works at BEACON House, Inc. VISTA Project is to create and monitor a sustainable after school and weekend STEAM Works program at BEACON House, Inc. for youth ages 3-18 and their families that focuses on STEAM content in a project-based design. The VISTA will work with community partners, families, and BEACON House, Inc. staff to develop strategies for recruitment and retention of youth and families in the program and recruitment/organization of volunteers to run the program. As well as write grant proposals, create and facilitate fundraisers, and find corporate donors to fund the program that all youth and families that want to attend can regardless of their economic status. The project will result in a fully sustainable program that will be able to provide high quality STEAM out of school time programming for individuals and families in Washington County who are from low-income households, minority backgrounds, and are exceptional learners.

Member Duties : 1. Review existing programming and design a sustainable STEAM Works program at BEACON House, Inc. 2. Develop, implement, and evaluate a marketing and recruitment plan for youth & families. 3. Develop, implement, and evaluate a recruitment plan for volunteers to staff the STEAM Works program. 4. Develop, implement, and evaluate a funding plan using grants, corporate sponsors, and fundraisers to create a way to fund the program so all families and youth can attend the program. 5. Develop and collect data on the program to measure effectiveness of the program at increasing achievement in STEAM learning.
