Fayette County Prevention Coalition VISTA

As an AmeriCorps VISTA member with the Fayette County Prevention Coalition serving in Washington Court House, you will enhance the capacity of local networks to respond to the opioid crisis by joining a coalition that is implementing intervention strategies known to reduce opioid addiction and overdose deaths. You will learn best practices as you address the epidemic locally and you and your coalition will benefit from the skills, tools and practices that will be shared through a program that supports eight coalitions in this network. Within your year of services, you will improve the health of Ohio communities through supporting the capacity of your local coalition to reduce the rate of opioid-related deaths. This project expands a coalition created in 2014 to battle the opioid epidemic in Fayette County, where 2016 data shows that 68% of all children’s services cases are related to substance use issues, 64% of common pleas court cases are related to opioids, and 60% of individuals in substance use treatment have heroin or other opioid use issues. The coalition includes school systems, businesses, media, law enforcement, faith based and civic organizations, health care organizations, and treatment services. The coalition has received several capacity-building grants from Ohio’s Prevention Action Alliance. Last year, the coalition also received a $125,000 grant from the Drug Free Communities program, funded by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, to support substance abuse prevention programs at the county level. This project supports the coalition’s expansion of prevention education and drug take back efforts, as well as the coalition’s work in engaging prescribers in reducing opioids prescribed.
