AmeriCorps VISTA Fundraising and Communication Coordinator
The Hernández After School Program (HASP) is run by the Friends of the Rafael Hernández School, Inc. (FOH), the 501(c)(3) organization that supports the Rafael Hernández School, a city-wide Boston Public School that provides dual-language instruction in Spanish and English for all 400 students in grades K1-8. The HASP, one of the main programs of FOH, serves 165 students, grades K through 8th, providing a safe, affordable option for working families after school hours while connecting afterschool and school day activities. Other programs of FOH include but aren’t limited the Playground Initiative, Arts Programming, and Mini-Grants for teachers. When we started HASP 17 years ago, there was sufficient city funding support to charge a reduced tuition. In the last 4 years we have begun to build up our FOH fundraising capacity to keep our costs to HASP families low. Our hope is that the Fund Development plan will make us sustainable as city funding decreases. We all continue to learn how to secure individual, corporate, and foundation donations. Given the unique nature of our Bilingual school model, we strongly believe that continuing to provide affordable, high quality programming for all Hernández students will ultimately strengthen the community, bringing individuals out of poverty through creating highly successful, fully bilingual members within their community. The VISTA member is a key piece of supporting families while we build our FOH long term sustainability plan. The selected VISTA candidate's Pre-Service Orientation (PSO) for this position will be 8/27-8/30/18 in Philadelphia, PA.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will focus on the following areas: 1.) Continue and facilitate an annual Friends of the Hernández fundraising campaign that can be passed on to the volunteer team in future years; 2.) Recruitment and training of family and community volunteers for fundraising support for our programs; 3.) Establish community partnerships to support FOH by providing organizational, educational, and financial resources. The VISTA member’s role in building FOH’s capacity to serve our families is tremendously important by creating long-term systems to keep tuition low while providing valuable enrichment opportunities. This VISTA member will stand to gain a variety of skills during their time with FOH including fundraising, communications, volunteer recruitment, collaborating with community organizations and working closely with our Board of Directors as well as the Director. We plan to support this person with a variety in-service training opportunities.
