Defending Communities in Service- Data Systems SB

Because the quality of justice in America should not depend on how much money a person has, NLADA leads a broad network of advocates on the front lines to advance justice and expand opportunity for all by promoting excellence in the delivery of legal services for people who cannot afford counsel. This new VISTA project, Defending Communities in Service, will build sustainable community relationships and data systems and practices that allow participating public defender offices to more holistically support communities in need. During the first year of this project VISTAs will build capacity within their host organizations focused on two separate tracks of service: Community Partnerships or Data Systems. The Data Systems VISTAs (that's you!) will serve as the driving force assisting their hosting Public Defender office to better understand the data that they have access to and how to utilize this data to better advocate for the needs of their programs and clients. Increased data awareness and system improvement will allow public defenders to more clearly understand the importance of their work on a community-wide level and to be able to guide their programs and organizational decisions based on data and proven programmatic success. All NLADA VISTA project members will explore opportunities to utilize technology and automation to create communication and data-sharing channels between public defenders and human services organizations designed to last beyond the period of their projects, with minimal maintenance required.

Member Duties : Evidence-based decision-making practice is an emerging trend in public defense, and the Santa Barbara Public Defender’s office has embraced this model to track policy, program, and client advocacy. Needs change from community to community within Santa Barbara County, but once those needs are identified, attorneys can better address client and community needs. We envision the Data System VISTA collaborating with our holistic defense social workers to integrate social factors and client needs into our case management system. Creating a data system to identify persons most at-risk, to identify gaps in services, to identify where services are being duplicated—and to create efficiency in coordinated services with other community partners and stakeholders. The project supervisor and the VISTA will work collaboratively to create individualized reports, track life outcomes, and make recommendations to improve client-centered representation.
