Opportunity Council - ReUse Works - Training Dev. VISTA YR 1

ReUse Works was incorporated in 2004 with a mission to provide job training, jobs, and economic development for low-income residents by using waste and discarded materials. In 2005, with the help of a VISTA member (one per year for three years), ReUse Works launched its first job training business and since then has provided job training for more than 300 low-income residents. The training business, Appliance Depot is now 100% self sufficient by salvaging, repairing, and selling used appliances. The business has also saved over 9,000 appliances for reuse by low-income households and recycled over 3,000 tons of appliances that could not be saved. In short, Appliance Depot has generated $2.4 million of revenue from waste and created ten full-time equivalent jobs by diverting appliances from the waste stream. In 2014 ReUse Works opened the doors to its second job-training program, Ragfinery. Based on the model of Appliance Depot, Ragfinery provides job-training and waste reduction by tapping into the waste stream of unwanted textiles. Donated fabric and clothing are sorted for use to sell in bulk to artists and crafters, upcycled into new items by volunteers, trainees, and consignors, or used in our workshops to teach upcycling skills. Since 2014, Ragfinery has diverted over 600,000 pounds of textiles from the waste stream, engaged nearly 10,000 individuals in donating, and reached 900 community members with creative upcycling workshops. Ragfinery teaches and inspires our community to address textile waste creatively, by providing the skills, tools, materials, and resources to make a difference. Trainees play an essential role in the business model by helping with sorting, pricing, cleaning, organizing, and customer service, in the process gaining valuable work experience toward long-term employment.

Member Duties : The Training Development VISTA position will redesign our training programs with a comprehensive approach, engaging community partners, agencies, businesses, donors, and funders to build a program that involves trainees in more areas of our business while providing services tailored to their specific needs, background, and interests. Specifically, the Training Development VISTA will be tasked with growing ReUse Works’ capacity for trainees at both Appliance Depot and Ragfinery. This will involve further developing: trainee positions and associated tasks; tracks that match trainees’ strengths and interests with the programs’ needs; thorough and consistent intake and evaluation processes; relationships and outreach with partner agencies; a grants database for relevant foundations and funders; and a donor database. In short, the Training Development VISTA will design a program that will increase ReUse Works' capacity for trainees as well as our level of service to those trainees.
