WSU VISTA- Rainbows-Research VISTA

Rainbows United, Inc. enhances the lives of children with special needs and their families by bringing together community resources and providing customized services. Rainbows is the area's largest provider of specialized services for children and youth who have intellectual and/or developmental delays. Founded in 1972 as a grassroots organization, we have always been responsive to community needs. Rainbows provides early intervention services for infants and toddlers in Sedgwick and Butler Counties who have developmental delays or conditions that typically result in developmental delays. We provide targeted case management for more children than any other provider in Kansas. Our after-school, weekend, and summer camp services serve school-age children who qualify through the local Developmental Disability Organization. We also provide in-home support to help children and youth to age 21 with activities of daily living and assistance in the community. Rainbows pioneered mental health services for infants and toddlers who are too young to receive a mental health diagnosis. Our mental health department provides classroom consultation and individual mental health services to enhance the social-emotional development of children ages birth through five. Rainbows provides services at no out-of-pocket cost to families, or at the lowest possible price so that a family's ability to pay is not a barrier to their child receiving early intervention or preventive services. The VISTA will join the Grants Team to maintain funding for programs serving low-income families and those with socio-economic high risk. The VISTA Research Fellow will help refine grants management processes to ensure that outcome data is captured and reports are delivered on time. In the summer of 2018, Rainbows will transition to a state-of-the-art electronic client records system. The VISTA member will come on board as this new system goes "live." It will be an exciting time at Rainbows!
