* PRC - No Kid Hungry Kalispell

In Montana, one in five children struggle with hunger. Montana No Kid Hungry is dedicated to putting an end to child hunger by improving food access through participation in school meal programs and raising awareness about this important issue. These efforts ensure that students remain healthy and ready to learn. PRC VISTAs serving with Montana No Kid Hungry partner with school districts—in this case, Kalispell School District—to develop the capacity to increase school breakfast and summer meal programs along with other food access projects. Kalispell, located in the idyllic Flathead Valley, is the largest city in Northwest Montana and one of the gateway communities to Glacier National Park. However, due to the changing economy and loss of blue collar jobs, many families have struggled and their children depend on school meal programs to get by. Kalispell recognizes that there is a need to guarantee that children within their community have access to food; they would like to address this issue by implementing a “Breakfast after the Bell” model in certain schools, expand summer meal programs through a mobile food truck, assess the feasibility of implementing an after-school meal program, and collaborate with local organizations on “The Family Dinner Project.” Hunger affects numerous aspects of a child’s life, from lessening their ability to concentrate in school to increasing their likelihood of developing certain diseases; therefore, this project will alleviate poverty by mitigating these disastrous effects of hunger. To end child hunger, we need you to come up to the Flathead Valley to serve in Kalispell!
