CAN: Building Curriculum Capacity for Youth Serving Agencies

CAN has become a local standout for educational development for under-resourced youth, specifically in after-school programs and educational summer camps. This capacity has been greatly supported by previous VISTAs. CAN's intellectual property has grown exponentially over the past few years- (ex. online data management system (includes program registration, data and outcomes tracking), educational summer camp curricula (3 fully developed 6-week camp themes that incorporate STEAM, social/emotional development, and other academic enrichment), after school program framework, hundreds of lessons, online volunteer, staff, and intern vetting and training tools, and decades of experience). This VISTA project is to support the retooling and repackaging of CAN's intellectual property for external agency use so that it can be shared with other agencies to enhance their impact on school-aged youth.

Member Duties : The VISTAs will help to oversee, refine, and repackage the newly minted Ready. Set. Tech! curriculum, which will provide the ~300 elementary students from the low-income families CAN serves with an engaging, hands-on technology-focused curriculum (infused with other STEM components) during CAN’s after-school and educational summer program. This will increase students’ interest in and knowledge of technology, how it affects their lives (childhood to adulthood) and how to navigate this fast-moving and evolving industry. The VISTAs will visit CAN summer programs implementing the new curriculum, review implementation, and integrate changes into the curriculum.
