Coharie Native Healthy Lifestyles Resource Specialist

The present population of the Coharie Indian Tribe is located in southeastern North Carolina in Harnett and Sampson Counties. To serve its members, the Coharie Intra Tribal Council hosts several programs and initiatives to support the health and wellness, community development, and cultural vitality of their tribe. Particularly relevant initiatives that will benefit from AmeriCorps VISTA support include: the Coharie Community Gardens (these are vast gardens, totaling approximately six acres and supported by an average of 40 volunteers); Talking Circles to address the prevalent health issues in American Indian communities, which focus on community connectedness and mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health and wellbeing for American Indians; weekly Senior Days focusing on the health and well-being of Coharie seniors in both Harnett and Sampson Counties; and the Great Coharie River Initiative, which is restoring several miles of culturally significant river land and allowing tribal members to return to the river for cultural and health connections. The Coharie Native Healthy Lifestyles Resources Coordinator VISTA position will primarily support fundraising and more efficient coordination of volunteers and services. Several of the initiatives mentioned above are relatively new and/or expanding rapidly. This has led to opportunities to leverage additional resources, yet the lack of dedicated staff for fundraising and limited evaluation activities has restricted fundraising. A VISTA member would focus on fundraising and evaluation activities which would leverage additional resources and capitalize on the momentum programming has created. In addition, the VISTA member would evaluate volunteer support for existing programming and develop and implement volunteer coordination activities to more efficiently and effectively deliver programming.
