2018 Hesed House PADS OES Summer Associate

Hesed House's mission is to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless and give people the chance to hope again. Hesed House is a national model for ending homelessness - one person, one family at a time. It is the culmination of nearly three decades of strategic evolution from a formerly acceptable model of "eats and sheets" to a Comprehensive Homeless Resource Center - a campus of centralized highly skilled professionals collaborating to provide the tools necessary to help individuals and families break free of the shackles binding them to homelessness. Our organization is dedicated to alleviating the plight of homeless persons by providing food, shelter, dignity and the services needed to return to independent living. Our low threshold Overnight Emergency Shelter (OES) is the second largest shelter in Illinois. The VISTA will assist in our OES program by helping our staff engage guests where they are at. The VISTA will help maintain and build capacity by being a volunteer liaison for the groups that serve at night, giving tours to new volunteers and helping members of our volunteer groups develop profiles on our volunteer software system and sign-in to their shift. We are looking for a highly motivated self-starter and team player, capable of working with staff to engage with our guests and help build relationships and paths to services that will help people attain housing. The VISTA will do this by working with staff to help each person relax out of crisis and survival mode to feel welcome, safe and ready to move forward at Hesed House. Previous experience with at-risk populations preferred, but not required.
