Greater Susquehanna Valley UW K-8 Afterschool Program VISTA
In 2015, Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way (GSVUW) embarked on a research project with the objective of developing strategic initiatives to address the social and academic needs of at-risk children in the community. They identified that the children attending elementary schools in Central Sunbury were the most at risk in their footprint with the highest rates of poverty with more than 70 percent of their students qualifying for free and reduced lunch, and the lowest third grade literacy scores with about half testing below proficient. GSVUW determined that these neighborhoods house families which are very transient, with a higher proportion of immigrant families who have heavy ESL needs and those living in poverty who have few family supports. When asked about unmet need in the community, guidance counselors report that, as a result of all of this, the greatest need is to create nurturing environments for children. Many public and private programs do already exist in the Sunbury community. However, these programs exists independently of one another and don't follow common outcomes. The challenges faced by the community have historically been a lack of available funding, as well as a lack of a coordinated effort to maximize existing resources. There are very few afterschool options for kids, and none that are referral-based which provide family supports. GSVUW has developed an in-depth, referral-based out-of-school program that attends to the holistic needs of children and families in a way that school cannot. The program will be modeled after Youth Net, a program in Marshfield, Wisconsin, where the high school graduation rates are 99 percent. The intent is to build documentation and infrastructure and engage partners in a program that piloted in the fall of 2018 and would be scalable and customizable in any community throughout their footprint.
