UW of Lebanon County Early Childhood Outreach Coordinator

According to Kids Count Data Center, in Lebanon School District, only 36.5% of children in third grade demonstrated proficiency in reading, and only 22.1 % demonstrated proficiency in math. Increased participation in early childhood education could certainly help raise these proficiency rates, but across Lebanon County, only 25% of children ages 3-4 are enrolled in publicly funded, high-quality Pre-K, and almost 65% of children eligible for publicly funded high-quality Pre-K are unserved. The VISTA would focus their efforts within the Lebanon School District due to the high rates of poverty and low scores of academic achievements identified. The P-3 collaboration of community partners will work together to expand this work into other parts of Lebanon County. The VISTA will conduct community outreach to increase understanding of the importance of high-quality early education and childcare; to build trust and communication with targeted communities; and to encourage eligible families to access programs aimed at improving outcomes for their children. This individual will also assist in implementing family engagement strategies, activities, and resources for families of children attending Lebanon school district and surrounding areas throughout the county. The work of the VISTA will strengthen the Lebanon community by convening stakeholders to develop lasting relationships, build trust and engagement with families, empower and provide skills and resources to families to access early learning opportunities in addition to serving as their child's first teacher, and will increase kindergarten readiness and raise overall academic achievement. Building a connection with families in poverty, provides a conduit to share information and programming available to assist in meeting other needs they may identify. A multi-pronged approach to both serving children and empowering families will assist in breaking the cycle of poverty.
