Pickaway Addiction Action Coalition VISTA

As an VISTA member, you will enhance the capacity of local networks to respond to the opioid crisis by joining a coalition that is implementing intervention strategies known to reduce opioid addiction and overdose deaths. You will learn best practices as you address the epidemic locally and you and your coalition will benefit from the skills, tools and practices that will be shared through a program that supports eight coalitions in this network. Within your year of service, you will improve the health of Ohio communities. Berger Health Foundation is the backbone organization of the Pickaway Addiction Action Coalition (PAAC), launched in 2015. The group has engaged a facilitator, gathered local data about addiction, and developed a 12-point plan for addressing the opioid epidemic, including prevention education, linking patients to treatments, and creating a diversion model for law enforcement. This grant-funded program will expand prevention education, increase drug take back, and engage prescribers in best prescribing practices. PAAC will implement a pilot program to address prescription drug misuse risk factors among student athletes by educating school athletic departments (athletic directors, coaches, athletes and their parents). All identified trusted adults (guardians, relatives, faculty, teachers, staff) will receive prescription drug misuse education. In two school systems, when any athlete has a sports-related injury, the athlete, coach, and parents will receive follow-up education about risks of prescription opioid misuse. Berger Health will engage its 30 primary care physicians and nurse practitioners in efforts to reduce opioids prescribed, and will host three drug takeback events. In addition, PAAC plans to initiate a public education campaign that includes PSAs and live presentations by physicians, nurses, and coalition members.
