The City of Salinas’ mission is to create a safe, healthy, prosperous, vibrant, and equitable community through targeted revitalization, sustainable policies, and well-designed land uses that facilitate a high quality of life and encourages community growth and partnerships. The Alisal is located on the Salinas’ East side and is home to a majority-minority population that is 94 percent Hispanic or Latino, with 33 percent of its residents living in poverty, compared to 21 percent of Salinas residents overall. Member Duties : The Housing Resources VISTA will work on tools that help Alisal and Salinas residents access affordable and safe housing. Based on researched best practices, the Housing VISTA will draft policies and ordinances to promote the production of affordable housing to address homelessness and overcrowding. This VISTA will also support the implementation of the Farmer worker Housing Action Plan. In the Alisal, the VISTA will train volunteers to complete a housing inventory documenting the approximate physical condition of housing in the Alisal to get a clear, data-backed picture of housing quality and needs in the area.
