Literacy KC: KC MLB Urban Youth Academy Comm. & Dev. Coord.

One of the largest challenges youth face in the Kansas City urban core is access to quality education, safe places, and after school and summer opportunities. Limited access coupled with childhood poverty is one of the most impactful risk factors youth face as they strive for academic and social success, contributing to a graduation rate in the Kansas City Public School district of only 65.3% and a daily student attendance rate of only 84%. The Kansas City Urban Youth Academy provides youth access to high quality resources and opportunities, delivering consistency and a safe, healthy and inclusive learning environment. The Kansas City Urban Youth Academy is a sub-site of the Literacy KC VISTA Program. The Literacy KC VISTA Program seeks to address illiteracy through a concentration on traditional literacy as well as health literacy, financial literacy, and digital literacy. The VISTA members and organizations that participate in the Literacy KC VISTA Program take a holistic, collaborative approach to literacy, building the organizations’ capacity to serve their clients, and addressing poverty in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
