NYC VISTA- In-Kind Resources Development VISTA

In support of NYC Service’s mission,Secret Snowflake was created to leverage corporate volunteers as well as Mayor’s Office employees to support children in the foster care and shelter system served by the Administration of Children’s Services, the Department of Homeless Services, the Human Resource Administration and the Mayor’s Office to Combat Violence. Secret Snowflake gives volunteers the opportunity to receive a letter from a child-in-need so that they may fulfill their holiday wishes. In 2017, Secret Snowflake served over 2,500 children through the support of 1,600 volunteers from the mayor’s office and private sector. An additional 2,500 books, toys, and clothing were donated by over 7 corporate sponsors and divided among the four City agency partners to be distributed to children who were unable to be supported by letters. The continued scale and success of Secret Snowflake has led NYC Service to expand its in-kind resource development efforts. On January 23rd, 2018, NYC Service conducted a focus group with representatives from a variety of City agencies to assess and identify key in-kind needs that would be most effective in serving their clients. This focus group, along with a follow-up survey assessment, helped shape the Be In-Kind program, which will leverage private sector support to provide critical resources to vulnerable New Yorkers. Launched in April 2018, Be In-Kind is comprised of four donation-focused initiatives, including Secret Snowflake, that will leverage corporate partners to provide in-kind resources to 10 City agencies that serve low-income and/or poverty-affected clients. Be In-Kind will inspire and empower companies to give back by “being kind.” Be In-Kind will serve 5,500 individuals by June 2019.
