NYC VISTA- Client Nutrition VISTA
 
 
 
The vision of the medical office to improve the health and well-being of homeless persons living in NYC, increase their chances of succeeding in permanent housing and independent living, and decrease morbidity and mortality. The medical office works toward the vision by monitoring the health of the homeless and by developing standards and providing technical assistance. The role of the medical office is: •Develop evidence-based clinical standards and models of care for the homeless for contracted providers and partners to implement, including an overdose prevention program •Update and improve the institutional referral process •Develop food and nutrition standards and review and update protocols •Programmatic oversight of medical, behavioral and food contracts •Collaboration with other agencies •Contribution to medical emergencies and outbreak response plans In this role, you will expand on the impact of the current VISTA project by assessing the nutrition beliefs of the Department of Homeless Services population and linking shelters and community based organization with developing appropriate nutrition interventions.

Member Duties : The Client Nutrition VISTA Member will support three phases of the project. The first phase is to complete a literature review for evidence based assessment methods and tools used with the homeless population. The Office of the Medical Director will then use these tools to assess the nutrition status of the homeless population served by Department of Homeless Services. The second phase of the project will be to analyze the data and use the findings to create a program to improve the nutrition status of the homeless population. The final phase will be to work with community based, city, state and/or federal agencies to secure funding, implement and evaluate the program. The project is currently in the first phase in the Adult population. As a VISTA Member, you will continue the project into the second and the third and final phase.
