United Way of Story County VISTA Income Specialist

United Way of Story County (UWSC) focuses on the areas of Education, Health, and Financial Stability – the building blocks for a good quality of life. We are successful because our dedicated team builds and fosters partnerships and collaborations that help individuals and families succeed. In the area of Income, we understand that in order to create a strong community, individuals and families must have their basic needs met first. This includes a safe place to live, access to food and reliable transportation. Sadly, these are not realities for all of our neighbors. We also understand that individuals and families must be equipped with the skills and resources to help move them toward self-sufficiency, including job training and financial education and coaching. Much work has been done to address financial education and coaching for at-risk women through the Women United program but more could be done to support all low income families. Of special interest for this year of service is gaining an understanding of job training/placement needs of low income families, availability of local job skills training programs and access to employment that provides a livable wage for families in our community. The AmeriCorps VISTA will help identify, assess, build and expand programs that provide free tax preparation for low income workers, financial education/coaching, and job skills/training leading to successful employment. The VISTA Income Specialist will also be an integral part of this work by coordinating an effort to identify existing resources for, and the unmet needs of, the low-income community; increase community awareness; and seek effective solutions. The successful candidate will be an outgoing individual that has the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, understands how to communicate effectively with a variety of different stakeholders and exhibits a passion for wanting to help make poverty history.
