New Enterprises Coordinator More Than Words

More Than Words (MTW) supports youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. Youth work two paid jobs at MTW: in our $2M bookselling business learning critical skills and a “YOU Job” where they advance personal goals in education, work, and life. MTW is in the midst of a game-changing expansion in the South End of Boston, growing to take over the first floor of our building with a new bookstore, marketplace, and community event space, and serve 60% more youth. In this project, the AmeriCorps VISTA member will grow opportunities for young people by helping MTW launch a new business line – a marketplace of products by other mission-based businesses - that develops new skills for youth and generates funds to support the mission. The New Enterprises Coordinator will collaborate with a MTW team to research and source products and develop systems for purchasing, inventory tracking, and training youth. The member will have the opportunity to learn while serving, develop new systems, gain highly useful youth training and business skills, and see our young people grow first hand, all in a dynamic, fast-based, team-oriented, and supportive environment. The member should be prepared to serve a schedule that includes a day on the weekend to support implementation of youth training and new marketplace systems. A $100 monthly housing reimbursement and a $75 monthly transportation reimbursement are available to members serving at MTW.

Member Duties : The New Enterprises Coordinator will collaborate closely with a Director of Retail and Events to build new contacts and systems for the new marketplace. Building on prior MTW research and contacts, the Coordinator will build up a portfolio of products from other mission-based businesses to test out selling in our marketplace and collaborate with retail staff to create and pilot systems to manage the marketplace, including methods to set prices, order new products, and track inventory. The Coordinator will also engage youth in the marketplace and develop a training plan to teach youth how to research, price, track, and sell marketplace products.
