NYC VISTA - Child Support Services - Communication VISTA

The Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) within the New York City Human Resources Administration/Department of Social Services (HRA/DSS) serves mothers, fathers, and guardians, regardless of income or immigration status, lifting tens of thousands of New York City children out of poverty every year; whether they pay child support or receive it, the parents and guardians served by OCSS show a passionate attachment to parenting that we believe people need to know about. The VISTA member would help tell those parents’ stories by creating a suite of video narratives to tell the stories of and celebrate the diverse families we serve. In the process, the VISTA member would make the role of OCSS more widely known and readily accessible to New York families. The VISTA will highlight the program’s focus on lifting children out of poverty and increase public understanding of the protections and initiatives in place that serve low-income non-custodial parents as well as low-income families in general. These stories should emphasize the contemporary child support program’s recognition of the value of noncustodial parent involvement and the long-term benefits children receive from active, positive participation by both parents. The materials created by the VISTA will be used as a bridge between OCSS and the families we serve, as well as community organizations, to widen access to child support resources and information that support the mutual goal of lifting children out of poverty.

Member Duties : As a VISTA member, you will build on a suite of existing video narratives to tell the stories of families involved in the Child Support Program. The VISTA will recruit interview subjects through site visits to OCSS offices as well as cold calls to clients and provide support in the vetting of potential project participants. The VISTA will film and edit all interviews and collaborate with OCSS senior leadership to produce and distribute videos and other multi-media materials to tell these stories. You will work to develop an online tool to provide community partner organizations with information about the many programs OCSS has to assist clients. The VISTA will communicate with partner organizations to assess the needs of their staff and clients and collaborate with OCSS staff to create/maintain an up-to-date and comprehensive resource to assist our partners in talking about child support.
