NYC VISTA-Youth Leadership Council (Group) VISTA

Support NYC Youth Leadership Councils growth to reach 30,000 high schoolers with leadership opportunities! Work with YLC host sites in nonprofits and city agencies, and build systems of support for youth recruitment/retention. Enter Your Program Description (2000 Characters or less) NYC Youth Leadership Councils, run out of NYC Service/NYC Mayor’s Office, is building a network to engage 10% of NYC high school youth (30,000) in leadership experiences annually by the end of 2020. The YLC team works to recruit both new host sites in city agencies, public schools, and nonprofits, as well as a diverse cross section of NYC high school youth to participate on a YLC during the year. YLCs focus on addressing city issues through policy, practice, and/or advocacy service, and seek to build youth/adult partnerships to address NYC’s greatest needs. In addition, the network seeks to engage all youth, with a special focus on attracting and working with youth whose voices have not traditionally been represented in student government and other leadership experiences. The YLC team works to build out quality professional development opportunities for the adults facilitating the YLCs, youth networking opportunities, and several events to bring YLCs together each year. In addition, the program seeks to build college and career readiness skills with the youth participating, as well as the skill and confidence levels of the adults running the YLCs (many of whom have not worked with youth previously). The YLC network currently anticipates 300-500 YLCs across the city in 2018-2019, with significant numbers in NYPD Precincts (40), NYCHA zones and developments (15+), GreenThumb Community gardens (15+), and NYC Schools (100), in addition to many nonprofits in all five boroughs. This position is ideal for candidates who want to develop project management skills, and impact youth development on a systemic level across New York City.
