NYC VISTA-Success Mentor VISTA (DOE)

The Office of Community Schools (OCS) was established in February 2015 to support 130 schools. As a key mayor’s initiative, the Department of Education was expected to support 200 Community Schools by the end of year three. By September 2017, OCS had exceeded the target and currently supports 227 Community Schools and hundreds of additional schools with Community-Based Organization run after-school programs. The Community School strategy integrates four main components into every school- family engagement, extended learning time, health services and attendance strategies- to ensure that students and their families receive the supports they need to be successful in school. Through coordination and collaboration with school leaders, Community School Directors connect students to resources to address any barriers they may have to their education. Success Mentoring is a primary intervention for chronically absent students. Success mentors are matched with a cohort of 15-20 chronically absent students and develop relationships to support the students and to ensure that they are connected to the resources they need to get to school every day. Success Mentors work with school leaders to determine appropriate interventions, review student data and analyze attendance trends. The Success Mentor VISTA will coordinate training and coach support for Success Mentors from 227 Community Schools with the goal of significantly increase the number of chronically absent youth on track to miss fewer than 15% of the school year.
