Focus On Foundations, Federal Way Public Schools
 
 
 
Focus on Foundations consists of 20 AmeriCorps team members that will support scholars in Federal Way Public Schools by providing literacy tutoring to young readers. Serving in the Focus on Foundations program will allow you an inside look into the field of primary education. All Focus on Foundations team members receive weekly training and development to reinforce best practices in the field of education. Focus on Foundation team members receive support and feedback in an inclusive environment designed to foster the development of leadership skills. This 6 month term of service can serve as a sustainable entry into the field of education and can be a springboard for any career specializing in youth services. This is a full-time, 6 month term of service. All team members receive a monthly stipend of $1307 (pre-tax) and all members are eligible for a $2960 education award upon successful completion of the term of service. *This position is contingent upon funding. Applications will be reviewed in the order in which they are received with interviews taking place until placement is filled.

Member Duties : Focus on Foundations Team Members engage in direct service with K-3 students. Each team member is assigned to one elementary school in the Federal Way Public Schools. Team members will provide tutoring to students that are below grade level in reading. During tutoring sessions, the AmeriCorps members focus on phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. Members will be trained to personalize their interventions in order to tailor the tutoring sessions to specific learning styles as well as to ensure that the tutoring sessions are culturally relevant and accessible to the students. AmeriCorps members will serve students in one on one or small group tutoring sessions. Each member will support an after-school program on their own or with a small team of AmeriCorps members. Members will recruit community volunteers to assist with their efforts and will track and submit student data. All Corps members receive a thorough Orientation as well as weekly on-going training and support.
