Opportunity Council - Supportive Housing VISTA YR1

Opportunity Council is a Community Action Agency located in Bellingham, WA, serving low income and homeless individuals and families in Whatcom County since 1965. The Supportive Housing VISTA will be housed within the Community Services Department which provides direct services to clients in the areas of housing, employment, energy assistance, financial literacy, and food access. The position will directly impact housing stability through the development of pro-social activities at two of our housing facilities, Dorothy Place and 22 North. By researching tenant-led models and shifting more responsibilities onto the residents themselves, a greater investment in their new homes will be developed leading to increased housing stability.

Member Duties : The VISTA will conduct assessments to determine the current status of operations and services at Dorothy Place and other similar facilities to create and improve the facility and operational structures at both 22 North and Dorothy Place thereby improving the living environment and increasing housing stability. At 22 North, a new permanent housing facility for chronically homeless individuals, the VISTA will develop a variety of systems and programs to enhance the tenant experience and facilitate the adjustment to a new living environment, thereby increasing housing stability. Dorothy Place is a mixed permanent and transitional housing complex for individuals and families with children that have experienced domestic violence. A recent conversion to permanent housing requires a re-evaluation of current programming to ensure effective delivery and management. By shifting to a peer-led model, residents will have a greater investment in their environment creating increased stability.
