SOAR Development VISTA

The Rhode Island SOAR (SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery) initiative aims to expedite access to disability income benefits for individuals who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and who have a serious persistent mental illness and/or medical impairment. Recovery from mental illness or medical conditions is challenging when one is struggling to meet basic needs. For many persons in recovery, accessing benefits is a first step and can be difficult without assistance. The Kent Center’s SOAR program works to grow and sustain the provision of SOAR services throughout Rhode Island. The population we serve intersects with a diverse range of demographics including veterans, individuals with substance use disorders, and individuals involved in the criminal justice system. We work closely with other programs and service providers to deliver wraparound services in a Housing First Model. The Rhode Island SOAR program is committed to implementing a strengths-based approach in our work, supporting our clients' self-determined needs, and respecting the dignity and worth of all persons. We are a small team (which includes two canine associates) and work together closely. We strive to maintain a fun and collaborative environment while working hard to bring income to individuals experiencing homelessness. The SOAR VISTA project requires members for activities such as grant writing, training, and needs assessments. Successful members will need strong writing skills and confidence working independently and as a team. It is necessary that VISTA members share our commitment to supporting recovery and improving the quality of life for people experiencing homelessness. The ideal candidate should be flexible, inquisitive, compassionate, and possess a sense of humor and passion for social justice.
