The Food Literacy Project Summer Associate
Louisville faces a serious health crisis, as rates of obesity and diabetes rise disproportionately among impoverished families with limited access to fruits and vegetables. In addition, teens from low-income, high-risk neighborhoods, face likelihood of unemployment and low education acquisition. The Food Literacy Project’s Field-to- Fork Program (F2F) empowers youth and teens to directly interrupt the cycle of poverty and become extraordinary leaders by contributing to the health of their community and building the practical skills needed for success in school and beyond. The need for the Food Literacy Project’s Field-to- Fork Program has never been greater. F2F fills an unmet community need—providing work and community engagement experience, education and training opportunities, and increased food access for young people while fostering life and leadership skills. We reach those most in need by focusing on JCPS Title 1 schools and recruiting teen participants for our Youth Community Agriculture Program (YCAP) from some of Louisville’s most underserved neighborhoods. Families in these neighborhoods face poverty rates on par with those in some of the poorest counties in Kentucky. In 2017, over 83% of the students we served received free or reduced school lunch.

Member Duties : Working alongside Program Manager, the Summer Associate will guide the teen YCAP crew to achieve a host of important objectives in community engagement, agriculture, culinary activities, professionalism, and personal development. Assist Program Manager and other FLP staff in the facilitation of targeted social justice discussions and youth development activities. Work as a team with FLP Program Manager and program staff to plan and coordinate workshops, guest speakers, and field study trips.
