Rural Works!

The Rural Works! program supports NC State’s commitment to social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina by offering an engaging service experience for high-caliber students who serve with employers to achieve their workplace goals in rural Tier 1 counties–places with vibrant histories, tremendous opportunities, but significant challenges. An orientation training session will be provided for participants to ensure a successful and meaningful experience. During the 10 week summer program, volunteers will complete service or engagement in the community to gain a better understanding of the counties history and culture. Volunteers will serve initiatives that focus on food security, opioid intervention, and summer learning at placement sites in different geographic areas of North Carolina. Participants will receive professional development coaching and support from the Rural Works! Coordinator during their experience. Throughout the program, the Rural Works! Coordinator as well as local NC State Cooperative Extension employees in the county will be available to assist the participant. Upon completion of the program, participants have the opportunity to attend career readiness workshops providing them with strategies for articulating their internship experience on their resume and during interviews. Low income students and first generation college students are encouraged to apply. Rural Works! was created by a partnership between the Division of Academic and Student Affairs, the Office of Outreach and Engagement, and NC State Cooperative Extension.

Member Duties : Fourteen (14) Summer Associates will work in Tier 1 counties to help address hunger for school-aged students who do not have adequate food and nutrition resources during the summer. North Carolina has one the highest percentages in the United States of children under 18 years of age who are food insecure on a regular basis: in N.C. almost 1 in 4. (24.6%) Also of concern in North Carolina is the growing opioid crisis. From 1999 to 2016 more than 12,000 North Carolinians died from opioid-related overdoses. This epidemic is devastating families and communities. It is overwhelming medical providers and is straining prevention and treatment efforts. Five (5) Summer Associates will work with local health agencies on substance-abuse prevention efforts. To address the problem of summer learning loss in K-12 aged students, three (3) Summer Associates will work with partner organizations to provide summer tutoring, STEM projects, and family outreach services.
