Serve New York VISTA 2018-19: LAWNY Bath

Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on the needs of veteran and military families, improving and expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures for the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Lyons, Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : LawNY is a not-for-profit corporation established to provide access to the justice system for low-income people and other vulnerable populations who have civil legal problems. LawNY’s principal activity is to provide legal representation to low-income persons in cases involving the essentials of life. LawNY also maintains programs that directly target specific populations, such as seniors, kinship care providers, the homeless, ex-offenders, domestic violence and sexual assault survivors, people with disabilities, and veterans. We assist individuals in the substantive areas of government benefits, housing, family, health, consumer education and employment. The VISTA will assist in alleviating poverty in rural counties by strengthening LawNY resources in those areas. The VISTA will recruit law students and pro bono attorneys; develop recruitment and training materials; create an online training database for future volunteers; and plan and implement legal clinics in rural counties.
