Serve New York 2018-19: Cornell Cooperative Ext-Alfred State

Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on the needs of veteran and military families, improving and expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures to the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the State, and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Lyons, Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly trainings, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : Nationwide, 15 million youth, ages 16-24, are not prepared for high-wage employment. The long-term impact is an erosion of basic skills many people once gained through summer jobs. Soft skills, such as the importance of a good handshake, are rarely taught. Youth from lower income households tend to face greater barriers to career training as well as limited resources and access to financial education and related services. The VISTA will implement a Job and Life Skill Boot Camp at Alfred State College. Young adults will be introduced to ideas for job acquisition, financial management, as well as professionalism and work ethic. The VISTA will train volunteers, HR representatives and guidance counselors to deliver the Boot Camp Curriculum. VISTA will create partnerships and foster collaboration among all stakeholders to create opportunity and access to the target population. They will also develop an online Moodle Course to supplement local and regional program access.
