* BMVP Summer - Pedal to Success - Billings Public Library

Billings Public Library is where our community connects and grows together, discovering the love of reading, the joy of learning, and the sharing of creative expression. The ability of children to read at grade level is the single strongest predictor of future academic and career success. Children who do not read at grade level by the end of third grade are 13 times more likely to drop out of school when compared to their grade-level reading peers. In Billings, the schools with the highest poverty rates have the lowest reading proficiency rates (2013 MontCAS) Nationally, 40% and 49% of fourth and eighth graders, respectively, who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals finished below Basic on the NAEP reading test. Engaging and outreaching to elementary and middle school students in experiential, enhanced learning environments are the keys to building interest in literacy success. Young learners greatly benefit from augmenting and enhancing educational experiences of low-income students by piquing their imagination through in-class and out-of-class educational experiences, which should assist in raising graduation rates in local schools. Improved access to literacy will give disadvantaged youth encouragement to embrace other educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering, math and the arts. Helping 15 children improve in academic performance through access to literacy ensures they can succeed in school, work and life.
