International Institute of MN-Curriculum & Outreach (LitMN)

The Literacy Leader will conduct research in the English for Work (EFW) department at International Institute of Minnesota (IIM). English classes have existed at the Institute for decades; IIM was the first location to offer English classes in Minnesota. Since its inception, IIM has prided itself on its services geared towards women. While IIM does not exclusively serve women, and men are welcome in our classes, 64% of IIM students are female. Current EFW students range in English literacy level from zero English literacy to a 7th grade reading level. EFW classes focus instruction on both workplace and academic English to assist students in finding and improving their current employment statuses. However, this goal means we are consistently working to move our students beyond our classrooms and into the workforce. Even once students are employed, they continue to need our English classes. Unfortunately, after students obtain employment, they often are unable to continue with our classes and lose touch with our organization. The goal of the Literacy Leader’s project is to connect with students and expand our current programming to best serve all students in our community. Purposefully designed curriculum focusing on specific supplemental classes will better serve our students in improving their education while employed. We are interested in making any alterations necessary to assist students in continuing their English studies after they gain employment. The Literacy Leader position requires an applicant to have a keen interest and skill in education and curriculum design and an aptitude for interacting with community members. *Position is part of the Literacy Leadership VISTA program of Literacy Minnesota. Literacy Minnesota fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all. Applications reviewed on rolling basis through July 1.
