Serve New York VISTA 2018-19:Mass Ave Project (MAP)

Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on the needs of veteran and military families, improving and expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures for the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester,Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : MAP has a history of addressing food insecurity, youth unemployment and food justice in Buffalo. Since 2003 we have employed and trained over 700 low income youth in urban agriculture, food systems, microenterprise and social justice, while increasing healthy food access to over 10,000 households through our Mobile Market. MAP will complete construction on a new 11,000 sq. ft. Farmhouse and Food Community Training Center in June 2018 with a goal of furthering our efforts to increase healthy food access and reduce hunger. The VISTA will work closely with MAP staff and youth to develop and support new curriculum, partnerships and protocols for all Farmhouse activities, including our Mobile Market and raise community awareness about food-based education and food-access initiatives. The VISTA will be crucial in helping us serve more youth and families, further increase food security and build organizational capacity.
