United Way of Central MN-Partner for Student Success (LitMN)

For our families learning English, literacy issues center on the difficulty and length of time needed to learn the English language. This project will develop a viable school/community model by which language learning is improved. Facilitated by United Way, the VISTA will work with school district personnel and assist in aligning English Language curriculum in our out of school youth organizations serving Somali and other new-to-country students to provide implementation and training. This is critical for families who are learning to read but essential for 4-8 grade students who are reading to learn and prepare for success 9-12 and beyond. By maximizing supports, the VISTA will help this population surpass expectations and strengthen student academic skills. The VISTA will have opportunities to work with licensed teachers, community organizations, community leaders and grassroots organizations. They will gain a variety of skills including communication, teamwork, problem solving, implementation and leadership opportunities in working with a diverse population. United Way of Central MN is a STRIVE organization with a mission to unite the Greater St. Cloud community in the collective pursuit of student success. Our aim is to increase opportunities so that all youth in our area achieve academically, possess strong social-emotional skills, engage in the community, and are ready for post-secondary/career training and experiences. We work with the school districts of St. Cloud, Sartell-St. Stephen and Sauk Rapids-Rice; St. Cloud State University; St. Cloud Technical and Community College; the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce, and over 50 other organizations (including businesses, education, community agencies, funders, and government) in the greater St. Cloud Area. The Partnership serves 17,615 students in grades PreK-12 within 13 communities in a tri-county area. Benefits: Paid parking or bus pass, phone reimbursement, career training and professional development.
