*Goodwill VISTA* Trekkers- Training Ctr Coord, Thomaston

For nearly 25 years Trekkers’ award winning youth development model has positively impacted hundreds of students growing up in the small fishing communities of Midcoast Maine. Our unique, six-year mentoring model utilizes expeditionary learning, environmental education, community service, adventure-based education and career-college readiness programming to build supportive relationships between young people and caring adults. All programs are focused on increasing students’ self-esteem, fostering valuable life skills and improving comprehensive resiliency outcomes. Since the organization’s start in 1994, Trekkers has had much interest from communities, organizations and youth workers, in and out-of-state, who are interested in learning more about our mentoring model and its emphasis on the power of relationship building in changing the lives of young people. In 2016 we launched the Trekkers Training Institute in partnership with the Emmanuel & Pauline A. Lerner Foundation. After a successful pilot in the summer of June 2017, the Institute is looking forward to will continue to train youth development professionals across the state of Maine in Trekkers’ unique youth development philosophy. The primary responsibilities of the AmeriCorps VISTA member will be tied to the support of the Institute Visit trekkers.org for more information.

Member Duties : By introducing Trekker’s youth development curriculum to other communities, we hope to have an even greater impact on breaking the cycle of poverty in rural Maine. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will expand our capacity to implement, assess, and support the Training Institute by coordinating a variety of different resources and assisting in the identification of grant funding.
